Elective foreign language courses are available to all students at Bilkent University. These courses are offered for four hours per week and carry three credit hours. The courses are available at basic, intermediate, and advanced levels.
The basic level consists of three terms, focusing on fundamental language structures and the development of basic verbal and written communication skills. At this level, students acquire essential grammar and vocabulary, supported by listening and reading comprehension exercises, as well as written and oral expression activities.
In the intermediate level, more complex grammatical structures and an expanded vocabulary are systematically introduced. The curriculum is designed to enhance students’ ability to communicate effectively in various situations, engage in discussions, and construct theses and antitheses to justify their viewpoints. The courses are structured in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
At the advanced level, students are expected to use the language proficiently and fluently across various fields, such as economics, politics, social life, and fine arts. The objective is to enable students to express themselves accurately and effectively, utilizing a comprehensive vocabulary and linguistic structures in their chosen language.
The availability and requirements of foreign language courses vary by department. Students should consult their respective departments for specific details regarding whether a course is mandatory.
